Our feature-film producers route inbound shoots through ICA (Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual), the federal Portuguese film agency that administers the cash-rebates scheme at 25-30 percent on qualifying spend capped at €4 million per project — competitive with Spain and Italy and aggressively positioned to compete with Eastern European areas. Recent inbound features have Steven Spielberg / James Mangold's Indiana Jones. Plus the Dial of Destiny (2023, partial sequences shot in Portugal), Bille August's Night Train to Lisbon (2013, Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling on location in Lisbon), Ira Sachs' Frankie (2019, shot in Sintra with Isabelle Huppert, Greg Kinnear, and Marisa Tomei), Wim Wenders' Lisbon Story (1994), and Fred Schepisi's The Russia House (1990).

Here is the breakdown. Working studio infrastructure runs through Tobis Portuguesa (historic Lisbon, 1932), Estúdios Valentim de Carvalho (Paço de Arcos), LXmedia Studios, RTP Studios, SP Films, Take 2000, and Ukbar Filmes. Domestic auteur production routes through O Som e a Fúria, Filmes do Tejo, Rosa Filmes, Terratreme Filmes, and Sociedade Óptica Técnica.

The Portuguese auteur lineage is one of European cinema's deepest — Manoel de Oliveira (Lisbon-born, longest active film career in history with Aniki Bóbó in 1942 through to dying at 106 in 2015. This includes Belle Toujours 2006 and The Strange Case of Angelica 2010, with Luís Miguel Cintra as lifelong on-screen anchor), Pedro Costa (the Fontainhas Trilogy, In Vanda's Room, Colossal Youth, Horse Money, Vitalina Varela 2019 winning Locarno's Golden Leopard), Miguel Gomes (Tabu 2012 winning Berlin's Silver Bear and FIPRESCI prize, the Arabian Nights trilogy, Grand Tour 2024 winning Cannes Best Director), João César Monteiro (God's Comedy, Phantom), João Pedro Rodrigues (Will-o'-the-Wisp, The Ornithologist, To Die Like a Man), João Salaviza (Mountain, Russa), and Cláudia Varejão.
