SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING

Underwater Filming

Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Portugal.

Scroll

Here is how this works in practice. Underwater filming captures visuals beneath the water's surface using specialized waterproof housings, lighting systems, and safety protocols. Portugal gives a top Atlantic coastline — the Algarve's clear southern waters, dramatic Nazaré, and Cascais near Lisbon — plus the volcanic Madeira and Azores archipelagos with deep-water marine wildlife including whales, dolphins, and manta rays.

Here is the short of it. We set up underwater operations with certified Portuguese dive teams, source cinema-grade waterproof gear, and manage permits via the Capitania Online+ platform under the Maritime Authority System (SAM). Our team handles logistics for Atlantic shoots, Azores wildlife work, and controlled tank work at MovieBox Studios in the Algarve. This operates dedicated water stages.

On Location

Underwater filming across Portugal — Algarve Praia da Marinha sea caves, Madeira whale-watching grounds off Funchal, Azores volcanic dive sites at São Miguel and Pico Island Vineyards UNESCO 2004, Berlengas Marine Reserve at Peniche, Nazaré giant-wave Atlantic storm captures, plus MovieBox Algarve water-stage controlled-environment work.

Here is how this works in practice. Our underwater packages route ARRI Alexa Mini LF and Sony Venice 2 in Gates Deep Weapon and Nauticam NA-VENICE-2 cinema housings rated to ninety meters, RED Komodo and Komodo X in Nauticam NA-KX2 housings, plus mirrorless A7S III, Canon R5 C, and Sony FX3 in Nauticam NA-A7SIII and NA-R5C for lighter run-and-gun documentary captures. Lensing complement runs Nauticam Wide Angle Conversion Port WACP-C and WACP-1 (water-contact optics with 130-degree underwater field of view), 8.5-inch dome ports for fisheye-and-wide, plus N100 Macro port for 105-millimeter Sigma Art.

Here is how the picture comes together. Lighting routes Keldan Video 8X CRI 96+ at fifteen-thousand lumens with twelve-thousand-Kelvin daylight balance, Light & Motion Sola 9600, Big Blue VL series, plus Bigblue VTL12000P for cave-and-wreck lighting at the Algarve sea caves. Diver-Propulsion-Car (DPV) Suex VRT and Bonex Discovery scooters for tracking shots, plus surface-supplied air (SSA) hookah systems for talent-with-cinematographer choreographed scenes.

Here is the short of it. Location applications cover Algarve coast (Praia da Marinha and Carvoeiro Benagil sea caves — the iconic Benagil Cave with its naturally-collapsed dome roof opening to sky has become one of Europe's most-photographed natural landmarks, Lagos Ponta da Piedade rock formations, Sagres cliffs at Cabo de São Vicente), Madeira archipelago (whale-watching from Funchal — sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, short-finned pilot whales year-round Atlantic Gulf Stream warming sustains fifteen-to-twenty-five-Celsius water temperatures), Azores archipelago (São Miguel Vila Franca do Campo islet caldera, Pico Island Vineyards UNESCO 2004 volcanic underwater landscapes with the world's largest seasonal blue-whale concentrations April-June, Terceira Angra do Heroísmo UNESCO 1983), Berlengas Marine Reserve (Peniche coast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve 2011 with grouper and conger eel populations), and Nazaré Praia do Norte giant-wave Atlantic storm captures (Garrett McNamara eighty-six-foot world record 2011). Capitania de Porto, DGRM, ICNF Marine Protected Area sign-off, Marinha Portuguesa surf-zone-safety planning, ANEPC emergency-preparedness, IPMA Atlantic-weather forecasting, ICA cash-rebates qualifying spend, IVA twenty-three percent, ATA carnet, and Segurança Social compliance routes through our production-services partners.

FAQ

Underwater Expertise

What cameras can you use underwater?

We operate pro underwater housings for cinema cameras including RED, ARRI, and Sony systems. We match camera and housing combinations to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality needs.

Do you provide certified dive teams?

Here is the breakdown. Yes, all our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with film production experience in Portuguese waters. Teams have dive shooters, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as needed, familiar with Atlantic and mid-Atlantic island conditions.

Can you film in pools and tanks?

Yes — MovieBox Studios in the Algarve operates dedicated water stages (3 stages, 1,500–3,000 m²) suitable for major shoots. We also work in extra pool and studio facilities. These controlled settings are ideal for actor work, product shots, and sequences needing precise control.

What about actor safety underwater?

Actor safety is paramount. We give safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training, and clear comms kit. Non-diving actors can achieve impressive underwater shots with proper support.

Where can you film in Portugal?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We film across Portugal—the Algarve gives the clearest mainland water and famous sea caves near Lagos, Cascais and Nazaré give central coast environments, the Azores are a global hotspot for blue sharks and mobula rays, and Madeira is great for monk seals and pelagic species. MovieBox Studios in the Algarve handles tank work. Coastal permits go through Capitania Online+ with a 3 weekday lead time.

How do you handle underwater communication?

We use pro underwater comms kit including in-water comms for diver planning and surface-to-diver links. Directors can communicate with underwater crews and monitor shots in real-time.

Productions in Portugal that need this often pair it with Underwater Lighting, Multi-Camera Setups, and Marine & Wildlife Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Camera Operators and Camera & Cinematography.
