SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING
Underwater Filming
Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Portugal.
Underwater filming captures imagery beneath the water's surface using specialized waterproof camera housings, lighting systems, and safety protocols. Portugal offers an exceptional Atlantic coastline — the Algarve's clear southern waters, dramatic Nazaré, and Cascais near Lisbon — plus the volcanic Madeira and Azores archipelagos with deep-water marine wildlife including whales, dolphins, and manta rays.
We coordinate underwater operations with certified Portuguese dive teams, source cinema-grade waterproof equipment, and manage permits via the Capitania Online+ platform under the Maritime Authority System (SAM). Our team handles logistics for Atlantic shoots, Azores wildlife work, and controlled tank work at MovieBox Studios in the Algarve, which operates dedicated water stages.

FAQ
Underwater Expertise
What cameras can you use underwater?
We operate professional underwater housings for cinema cameras including RED, ARRI, and Sony systems. We match camera and housing combinations to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality requirements.
Do you provide certified dive teams?
Yes, all our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with film production experience in Portuguese waters. Teams include underwater cinematographers, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as required, familiar with Atlantic and mid-Atlantic island conditions.
Can you film in pools and tanks?
Yes — MovieBox Studios in the Algarve operates dedicated water stages (3 stages, 1,500–3,000 m²) suitable for major productions. We also work in additional pool and studio facilities. These controlled settings are ideal for actor work, product shots, and sequences requiring precise control.
What about actor safety underwater?
Actor safety is paramount. We provide safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training, and clear communication systems. Non-diving actors can achieve impressive underwater shots with proper support.
Where can you film in Portugal?
We film throughout Portugal—the Algarve offers the clearest mainland water and famous sea caves near Lagos, Cascais and Nazaré provide central coast environments, the Azores are a global hotspot for blue sharks and mobula rays, and Madeira is excellent for monk seals and pelagic species. MovieBox Studios in the Algarve handles tank work. Coastal permits go through Capitania Online+ with a 3 weekday lead time.
How do you handle underwater communication?
We use professional underwater communication systems including through-water comms for diver coordination and surface-to-diver links. Directors can communicate with underwater crews and monitor shots in real-time.
