SCENE 01 / DP SERVICES
Director of Photography Services
Experienced DPs for film, TV, commercials, and documentaries throughout Portugal.
Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Portugal's extraordinary Atlantic light — soft yet luminous — and its varied locations from Lisbon's tile-clad streets to Porto's Douro Valley have attracted growing global shoots activity, with local DPs bringing a distinctive visual sensibility shaped by the Portuguese cinema tradition of directors like Manoel de Oliveira.
Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Tóbis Studios in Lisbon or on location in the Algarve, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by the ICA (Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual) cash rebates program.

On Location
DP services across Portugal's Atlantic-light corridor — Lisbon's tile-clad streetscapes, the Douro Valley UNESCO terraces, Algarve cliffs, and Madeira-Azores volcanic archipelagos — anchored by the visual heritage of Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa, and Miguel Gomes.
Here is how this works in practice. Our DP roster routes through the visual lineage of Portuguese cinema: Acácio de Almeida (Manoel de Oliveira's regular collaborator across a hundred-plus-year career spanning Aniki Bóbó 1942 through the director's death in 2015 at age 106 — the longest active filmography in cinema history), Rui Poças (Miguel Gomes' Tabu 2012 Berlin Silver Bear FIPRESCI Prize, João Pedro Rodrigues' The Ornithologist, and Ira Sachs' Frankie 2019 shot in Sintra with Isabelle Huppert, Greg Kinnear, and Marisa Tomei), and Carlos Lopes (Pedro Costa regular across the Fontainhas Trilogy, In Vanda's Room, Colossal Youth, Horse Money, and Vitalina Varela which won the 2019 Locarno Golden Leopard).
Here is how the picture comes together. Camera packages route through Lisbon rental houses with ARRI Alexa Mini LF, Mini, and 35. Sony Venice 2. RED Komodo and V-Raptor. And Cooke S4/i, Zeiss Supreme Prime, Leitz Thalia, ARRI Signature Prime, and Angénieux Optimo zooms — supplemented by cross-border Sigma Cine Madrid and ARRI Rental Madrid for specialty glass on five-to-six-hour Iberian van runs.
Here is the short of it. Crew agreements route through Sindicato dos Trabalhadores da Indústria Cinematográfica conventions, Código do Trabalho framework, Segurança Social at roughly thirty-four percent employer input on retained crew, ACT labor-inspectorate compliance, and ICA (Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual) cash-rebates eligibility certification at twenty-five to thirty percent of qualifying Portuguese spend. Administered annually against a four-million-euro cap that has built the inbound pipeline behind Indiana Jones 5 Dial of Destiny (Spielberg-Mangold partial Portugal 2023), 1899 (Netflix Bo Odar-Friese 2022 Portuguese co-production), Lisbon Story (Wim Wenders 1994), Night Train to Lisbon (Bille August 2013 Jeremy Irons-Charlotte Rampling), and Glória (Netflix The country's first 2021).
Here is what we have to work with. Visual references draw on Cabo da Roca's westernmost-mainland-Europe cliff light, Sintra's UNESCO 1995 Pena Palace pastel volume, Porto's UNESCO 1996 Ribeira fog at golden hour over Douro UNESCO 2001 terraced vineyards, and Belém's Manueline Gothic Jerónimos UNESCO 1983 limestone glow. IVA at twenty-three percent invoicing and ATA carnet short-term-import handling routes through Autoridade Tributária via our production-services partners.
FAQ
Our DP Network
What experience levels of DPs do you provide?
Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.
How do you match DPs to projects?
We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.
What camera systems do your DPs work with?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.
Do DPs come with their own equipment?
Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.
Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Portugal?
Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Portugal, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Portuguese DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.
What's included in DP day rates?
Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.
